Emotionally Focused Therapy is as described, a therapy that is focused on emotions as the central facet of human functioning, and element in therapeutic change.
EFT is focused on experiential processes, how you find meaning, and how these elements are emotionally understood.
Essentially, cognition (your understanding) and emotions are not independent. EFT uses emotional processing to reinterpret problematic and unwanted self perceptions as well as perceptions within relationships.
The emotions you experience are innate and adaptive for survival. Your emotions alert you when something is wrong, and they guide your thinking to ensure required behavioral responses for your safety and survival.
However, often expressed emotions do not necessarily suit the situation at hand and need to be closely attended to. Incorrect thoughts or unjustified thoughts may be the driving factor. Through careful exploration and identification, it is possible to understand, transform and manage the emotion(s).
EFT offers an individual a better understanding of the source(s) of their emotional turmoil, greater insight and realignment with their emotional reality as well as greater resilience to flawed or unjustified patterns of thinking.
EFT is a relatively shorter term therapy process and effective in individuals or couple’s therapy.
EFT enables couples to restore emotional connections through open and responsive dialogue. This process aims to reconstruct supportive understanding and responsiveness within the relationship to ensure emotions are aligned with the situational causes.
